Step Down Transformers

Have you ever been close to a power station that's bordering your neighborhood or that sits along the road side?  Chances are you have, and you have noticed a large sign that says, “DANGER – HIGH VOLTAGE.”  When you see that sign, always remember it's best to stay away, it really could be very DANGEROUS!  Electrical voltage travels through power lines at a transmission range from 155,000 to 765,000 volts and usually travels a distance up to 300 miles at a time until it reaches a power plant or substation for distribution.

Step-Down Transformers Send the Correct Power to Homes and Businesses in Order to Meet Their Required Power Demands

After high voltage is transmitted, and granted it does lose a little voltage along the way, it has to be distributed to the proper destinations.  Below is a diagram showing the sequence of stepping down high electrical voltage to meet the required electrical power that is transmitted to our homes and businesses.  Thanks to a step-down transformer system, the proper voltage will go to each destination supplying it with the correct amount of electrical current it takes to operate job demands and applications.

Step down transformers decrease voltage and transmits it to its proper destination.

The above diagram is a great depiction of how electrical voltage arrives at its proper site with the correct power input.  The step-down voltage transformer does its miraculous job by changing the high electrical voltage to a lower voltage that is functional for operation of industrial equipment systems or home use.

How Do Step-Down Transformers Work?

When electric current flows, it creates a magnetism around it.  When a magnetic field changes, a voltage is made.  A step-down transformer changes high voltage to low voltage by using a technique called magnetic induction between coils, which can convert voltage levels to the desired amounts needed.

The step-down transformer takes in high voltage through its primary coils (windings) and lets it run through various secondary coils wound around an iron core.  Because the current in the primary windings is of higher voltage and is alternating, the magnetism in the core alternates also causing the current in the secondary coils to alternate with a lesser voltage.  The secondary windings can then make it possible to send an electrical power output that is of a smaller voltage.  After the step-down transformer decreases the power, it transmits the lesser voltage through an output wire sending the proper electrical power to its destination.  This phenomena allows equipment to operate with the correct amount of electricity once it reaches it designated input source.

It is amazing how step-down transformers enable the efficient operation of our machinery and appliances.  By receiving the correct electrical voltages we need, we don’t have the worry of an overload of electrical voltage causing equipment burnout or permanent damage.  Our households and businesses are much more efficient and safer because of step-down transformers!
