Step-Up Transformers
By now you have read quite a few articles on voltage transformers. You probably have a pretty good understanding of how they work and how important they are in the management of voltage control. Electricity can be complicated, and it’s more than amazing that we have developed the technology to regulate voltage and current to meet the power demands of any application requiring electricity. Having voltage control eliminates damage to machinery and provides safer environments when operating equipment. Step-Up Transformers are Used When More Voltage is Needed to Operate EquipmentJust as step-down transformers lessen voltage, step-up transformers increase voltage for equipment that needs to operate on a higher voltage level. The principles in stepping up voltage are much the same as stepping down voltage, but in reverse. The windings and coil shown below will help you understand how a step-up transformer works.
How Do Step-Up Transformers Work When Electrical Current Needs to be Increased?
Step-up transformers work much the same as step-down voltage transformers work, but only in reverse. Remember, the primary coil wrapped around the core has an electrical input that is an alternating current (AC). The primary coils (windings) cause an alternating magnetic field in the core. The alternating core then causes the secondary coils (windings) to alternate, thus changing voltage.
Direct current (DC) does not work in transformers because they only create a magnetic field in the core, but it is not an alternating magnetic field because direct current is constant and doesn't change. With direct current, the core would not have an alternating magnetic field and couldn't produce voltage in the secondary coil.
In the step-up transformer, you will notice that the primary coil has a lesser amount of wrappings at the source of input. The secondary coil has a greater amount of wrappings, which will allow a larger voltage, and the current would be greater at the output source. This is stepping up voltage from a lower input source of power, which would be used for equipment needing higher levels of electrical current for operation.
Step-Up Transformers Allow Businesses to Utilize Different Levels of Voltage and Electrical Current for a Variety of Applications
Transformers give us, especially businesses, great flexibility and save enormous expense by allowing us to change voltage control. We can operate equipment that runs on a higher voltage, such as large industrial pumps and drills, or we have the option of utilizing office equipment that can operate on the standard 120v to 220 volts. We can accomplish this while having offices and factories set up in the same building and using voltage transformers to change electrical levels where needed.
Step-up transformers, or whatever type of transformer your applications require, make operation much more applicable and cost effective. Also, it's so important to work with a reputable manufacturer and distributor of step-up transformers.
