Voltage Transformer Applications

Electricity traveling via power lines is an amazing event.  Without it, we wouldn't have all the modern conveniences or products that we easily take for granted.  It seems so effortless, but the electrical current that travels along the millions and millions of miles of cable bordering the countryside can actually be very dangerous without being controlled.  That's why we need voltage transformers to regulate the amount of electrical current that enters our input power sources.  By controlling voltage that supplies our homes and work places, we don't have the concern of unsafe and unbalanced power.

Most of us never think about the regulation of electrical voltage.   We assume the electrical devices that we use every day always have the correct power supply.  However, if you are a skilled person in charge of operating electrical equipment or supervising an assembly line, you are well aware of voltage transformer applications.  Anytime current is too powerful for equipment and machinery that is in operation, voltage transformers are needed to regulate power, usually stepping down current, to meet correct power requirements.  On the other hand, if power supplies are not ample to operate larger types of machinery, there are transformers that can actually step up voltage for optimal operation.

There are specified voltages for residences and commercial use that every country or regional area has standardized, and there has not been much change in regulations since each country set their own national electrical standards decades and decades ago.

Electrical Voltage Transformer Applications have Specific Regulations

Voltage transformer provide the correct electrical voltage and wattage for job applications. The U.S. and most of the western hemisphere uses electrical systems that operate at 110 – 120 volts of electrical current.  Most other countries use 220 – 240 volts as a general standard.  The 110-volt systems have a 60 Hz cycle, and the 220-volt systems have 50Hz.  The difference in voltage can make certain applications run faster than normal.  This could cause a clock to operate faster, or a fan would have to operate on high speed when medium speed is preferred.  Countries utilizing direct current (DC) could easily destroy equipment if plugged into a power source that wasn’t made to operate in a direct current power system.

A great example of a voltage transformer application is as follows:  An industrial plant requires a 480-volt, three-phase power source for their many operational motors.  However, they only need a 250 volt input source for their building lighting system.  To operate their office equipment, they need 120 volts.  Since the utility company will only provide their plant with a 480/250 volt, three-phase system, the plant will require one or more voltage transformers for the regulation of the required electrical voltage going to equipment that needs 120 volts in order to meet their specific power loads for job applications.
